Over the weekend my girlfriend and I had the chance to get out and go to the movies, a rare treat. No we did not go see the cheesy Twilight film, but we decided to see Immortals. We are both fans of action and mythology so wanted to check it out. The previews got us all pumped up to see it. Another plus that day is that the theater we go to is super cheap. Two 3D tickets, lg drink, and small popcorn for only $23.

On to the movie. Immortals is about Theseus, a mortal, chosen by Zeus to defend the Gods against the evil King Hyperion. This is the first film I seen Heny Cavill (future Superman) play as a leading character. Cavill is more known for his role in The Tudors. The biggest name in the film is Micky Rourke playing Hyperion. Also in the cast is Stephen Dorff, Freida Pinto, John Hurt, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, and Luke Evans as Zeus.

The film had some great qualities to it. The 3D was awesome, I would not watch it in another else. It was highly action packed and full of blood. I will say this, this film is not for the light hearted. I just curled in my seat when Hyperion ordered the smashing of a man’s balls with a hammer. The story seemed good and I thought it was awesome to see the Gods portrayed as the way they were. I kept sitting through the film though feeling as there was something missing, and I could not put finger on it.

My largest disappointment was knowing that Freida Pinto’s bare ass is really a stunt double butt. At the end it seems that it was set up for a sequel, but who knows. I am unsure where it would go, but if the sequel does happen I think it will be better then Immortals. I will leave it at that without giving too much away.

I definitely think this film is worth watching in 3D and with surround sound. You will really miss out otherwise.

Last night I had the chance to check out the film Rise of the Apes. I remember seeing the trailer months ago when it first aired. I laughed as my girlfriend says, this looks like a copycat of Planet of the Apes. It turned out it was the prequel trailer. The trailer continued to show through every movie we watched over the months and I kept saying to myself, this movie looks dumb. James Franco is going to be in another movie that just bombs.

Well, I was in for a surprise as I was proven wrong. After I heard many critics say it was great, also I heard regular people say it was good too, I decided to watch it. I will say this, anyone could of played Franco’s part. There were no stand out performances besides that of Andy Serkis, who played Caesar the main ape.

I wanted to research the background of Planet of the Apes as I was too young to remember the originals. I will be rewatching them again though. The Rise of the Apes is a prequel and shows how the Apes start to become a dominant species. Some of the big errors are with the character Caesar. It turns out Caesar was not the first of the Apes, but his father was. The do show that his mother passes down the genes to him of being smart. They combine his father’s character with the actual Caesar, as Caesar was not introduced until the fourth installment of the Ape movies.

The film starts off with Caesar’s mom being killed due to protecting her young. Will Rodman(Franco) is creating a drug that will help with altheimer’s disease. It turns out the drug does not work well on humans and has only a temporary cure, while it helps out monkeys even more. Rodman adopts Caesar and trains him, but after protecting Will’s father(John Lithgow), Caesar is taken to animal control. It is there he meets his own kind and later free’s them and injects them him the smart serum.

If you have not had the chance to see this film, you should. This is probably one of the better remakes I have seen of a film. This is not really a remake, but a start to a returning classic. If Warner Bros. plays this right this could go very well for them.

The weekend box office results are in and Captain America took the top. I saw the film yesterday, and I did not have high expectations of it because I knew what kind of comic book hero the Captain really was. Captain America is pretty much a steroid induced super soldier. The United States recruited a young Steven Rogers, played by Chris Evans, to test out a new serum that will create an army of super soldiers. All goes well until an assassin from the evil Hydra program destroys the lab and the doctor who created the serum.

Rogers has nothing left to do and is told to be a mascot for the war and dress up and perform at USO’s around the globe. Once Roger’s is in Italy he finds his best friend, Bucky Rogers (Sebastian Stan), has been taken as a prisoner of war. Of course the Capt. rescues him along with many others. Some of his rescued men agree to take down the Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving, and the rest of the evil Hydra program.

I think Chris Evans did a good job as Captain America, and I look forward to him taking a leadership role in the Avengers. Speaking of the Avengers, make sure you stay till the end of the film to get a special unseen preview of the film.

If you are a comic book geek like I am watching this film will excite you. You will see tie-ins from the Thor film, so make sure you see that film first. One of the major tie-ins is the Cosmic Cube that the Red Skull is after. Another cool thing you see is Dr. Arnim Zola in human form before he becomes an evil robot face.

Now for some spoilers for the possible next Captain America. If you know the comics, you know Bucky is not really dead. He later becomes the assassin known as the Winter Soldier, who also then later becomes the new Captain America after Steven Rogers dies. I am sure though they will not go with the death of Captain America story line in future films.

One more thing before I wrap this up, and that is the bright star in this film. Hayley Atwell did an amazing role in this and just made men droll. Atwell along with her amazing figure took the spotlight of the film. Atwell has been the huge talk of the film. I am looking forward to seeing her in a lot more sexy roles.

In all if you are a comic book fan and have been following the Avenger series, this is a must see. I am though very surprised it had such a huge audience to take Harry Potter out during it’s second week of being released.

This weekend Transformers Dark of the Moon beat out all the competition and took top of the box office. I would of not expected anything less with all the hype. The question is, was it worth the hype? I had the chance to view the film over the weekend and will say that I enjoyed it more than the other two Transformer films. The action was non-stop from beginning to end with fast cars and awesome fights. The CGI was absolutely incredible and Michael Bay was able to pull of a 3D version that looked fantastic.

Bay decided to use the same crew that shot Avatar in 3D. This was a huge deal for me, as Avatar is the best film I still have seen in 3D. A lot of the times when films are saying they are in 3D they are converted to 3D and not shot in 3D. What is the difference. Well watch Clash of the Titans in 3D and then Avatar in 3D. Titans was absolutely blurry and terrible. This is a decision maker for me when I decide to pay the extra $3 a ticket to see 3D. I will say the extra money is worth it for Transformers.

A little about this sequel is that the Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft that has been hidden on the moon since the Apollo landing. They are in a race against the Decepticons to learn its secrets, which may destroy the world.

We see pretty much all the cast returning besides Megan Fox, who was replaced by Rosie Huntington Whitely. Whitely did a fair job at her acting, no better than Fox. I will say I still like to look at Fox more. They do explain the transition, and Whitely and Fox are not the same character. We also see Josh Duhamel, John Turtorro, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Dunn return for this film. They are joined by hit crowd of Patrick Dempsey, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, and Ken Jeong.

The Transformers who returned in this film are Optimus Prime, Megatron, Ironhide, Starscream, Ratchet, Wheelie, Shockwave, Soundwave, and Laserbeak. Some new Transformers you may see are Sentinal Prime(voiced by Leonard Nemoy), Sideswipe, Dino, Brains. I am sure there are some that I am missing. Now, I am a big fan of Transformers and the cartoons, and some of these I have never heard of. I was excited to see Leonard Nemoy take part in this film. Nemoy voiced the evil Galvatron in the original cartoon film.

In all though if you are a Transformers fan or enjoy an action packed film, you will like this film. It brings in hot chicks, explosions, comedy, and amazing effect. It is the perfect combination for a Hollywood blockbuster.

Sunday I had the chance to view the new X-men: First Class film, and I have to say if I was not an X-men fan, it would of been an okay film. I knew that I would get disappointed, but hoped the special effects and action would counter balance that. Unfortunately, it still do not live up to itself.

The film starts off with Eric (Magneto) as a young kid in the nazi prison camps. The reenacted the shoot with the kid bending the gate. It then had Kevin Bacon as the main bad guy and teaching Magneto to excel his powers, and later find out Bacon is the character of Sebestain Shaw. Shaw is the leader of the Hellfire Club which also has Riptide, Emma Stone, and Azazel on the team. In the comics I believe Azazel was never on the team.

Now here is the many problems I have with this movie, it is so inaccurate. First it doesn’t follow any of the other films. Then it doesn’t follow any of the comics. I feel like the director and Fox just never did their research, picked some characters out, and then shit all over any history X-men had.

In the film it has Professor X teaming up with Magneto and gathering mutants with Cerebro, that Beast built. In the comics Professor X and Magneto built Cerebro, hence why Magneto built his helmet to keep Charles out. In the film Shaw built the helmet. Now the team in the movie consisted of Angel (female), Havok, Beast, Professor X, Magneto, Banshee, Mystique, Darwin. The original team in the comics was Beast, Cyclops, Angel (male), Iceman, Jean Grey, and Professor X. First off Havok is younger than Cyclops and probably is like in diapers during this period of the film. Mystique was never an X-men at all.

All and all if you want to see the film and do not know anything about the comics go for it. If you are a fan, you will hate it.

I know this is a bit late, but on the opening day of Shutter Island my friends and I flocked to the theater just like many others do that day. It was my friend’s birthday and he wanted to see Shutter Island. I saw the previews for it and was intrigued, but even more excited when I heard all these great reviews from “professional” film critics. So many were like Leo is at his best, Martin Scorcese scores a big one with Shutter Island. People, go and see it for yourself and I will say that the critics have struck out on this one.

The film is based in 1954 and stars Leonardo DiCraprio as Teddy Daniels. His partner is Chuck Aule, played by Mark Ruffalo, and the two of them are assigned to investigate a missing patient at a maximum security psychiatric ward. The ward is on an island called Shutter Island, hence the title. While trying to investigate the missing patient they seem to not get any help from the staff of the ward. The staff is hiding something from the two detectives and Teddy wants to uncover it.

I love Martin Scorcese, but this film was not his best directing. There was terrible flash back scenes that seemed too far fetched. It seemed that in the flashbacks and dreams the ghost of Teddy’s wife was giving him clues on how to solve the case. Leo’s fake Brooklyn accent was terrible, and again shows to me that he is not that great of an actor people make him out to be. I still say his best film was “Whats Eating Gilbert Grape,” and that is because Leo played himself. He seems to have the same acting element in every film, and it just bores me. Him being in the film was one of the biggest worries I had about the film, and I was right. Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley did a great job, unfortunately their performances were not major ones.

After we exited the theater of this film, every person I walked by said “This movie was stupid.” I have never been to a film that so many people did not like it, or were truly upset with. The previews do not look bad, but let me remind you people this is a mystery movie not a horror/thriller. A lot of people went into the film thinking it was going to be a horror movie, and it is not. I knew it was going to be a mystery and still thought it was terrible. I bet you will see this movie drop down the box office fast after word gets around about how bad it is. It only did well the first week because of the preview and the hype.

This past Valentine’s Day, I spent time with my loved one just like many others do on this Hallmark created day. We started our Vday by exchanging gifts, then going out to a wonderful dinner, and ending it with the movie Valentine’s Day. Of course, I did not want to see it, or even give it a chance. A movie named after a day made just for women, is a movie just for women. I heard so many bad rumors about the film, and how terrible a film would have to be to have that many good actors in it, for such a low budget. Well, after I heard some people say it was good, I felt a little bit better. I mean if it was my choice of a movie for Valentine’s Day weekend, it would of been Wolfman. I know, very romantic. You have to think though there is action and romance in it. It can bring the female and male audience. While Valentine’s Day only brings the female audience.

Well, here we are. At the movie theatre, i’m sitting down and the Carmike theatre is completely filthy. The film is about several people who are falling into or out of love on Valentine’s Day. Reed, played by Ashton Kutcher, starts his day off with the beautiful Jessica Alba, by proposing to her. The story then intertwines many other couples who are all connected through out that day. I enjoy films that are like this, especially mysteries. I will give a kudos to the writers of this film, who did make the film interesting enough by seeing who is connected to who and how. The star power in this movie included Jamie Foxx, Kathy Bates, Julia Roberts, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, and much much more. For the young tweens, it even included Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner.

The film was over two hours long, which made it even more dreadful. I know the story could of been shorten, drastically. The film did hold my attention, and I know that every female enjoyed it. Besides the length of the movie I only had a few bad things to really say about the film. First being, Taylor Swift needs to stay a singer. She was a terrible actress, and I believe she could lose fans if she continues. Second, just knowing that Julia Roberts was paid 500,000 a minute for that film makes me sick. She is in it for six minutes, and barely has any lines. She also gets 3% of the profit. That girl has a hell of an agent, because her star power is not that great any more if you ask me. I have not enjoyed any of her films since Erin Brockevich and I can barely even say that.

On another note, women, please do not make your men see films like this in theater. A movie theater costs so much money now these days, and the big reason you go is for the experience. Films that have loud sounds or amazing 3D graphics are worth it. You pay all that money for the surround sound and the amazing screen. You do not need surround sound for romance or dramas. The Wolfman would of been worth seeing because it is an action, it could be terrible all I know, but you can get my drift. Romance films are better watched on the couch snuggling together instead of sitting uncomfortably in chairs.
